Back in August I attended the Dead Formats VHS Convention in Indianapolis and met Memphis filmmaking legend Mike McCarthy. In November, he’ll be doing a 15th anniversary screening of his last feature film, 2009’s Cigarette Girl, and I wanted to bring him on to reflect on and celebrate this wonderful little dystopian science fiction film I recently discovered.
Joining us for the conversation is the titular character – Cori Mattice (then Cori Dials) – as well as the cinematographer and editor, Wheat. We have a good conversation on the film and how it nails being low budget, high concept science fiction. There’s a giant segment missing from the middle of this episode which will be released as a YouTube exclusive, so you’ll need to head on over there and subscribe so you don’t miss it.
