Carl Doninger is the guy behind one of my favorite events of the summer, the year, the city I live in: POPCORN! Yes, you’ve heard much about this convention on the show throughout its existence. And well, that’s because it’s important to me and so many others. You’ll get to learn all about this year’s event (July 9-11, 2021) and some of the history behind its creation as well as some of Carl’s fond memories.
His film that he brings to the show is 1979’s Breaking Away. A film nominated for 5 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress and winning for Best Original Screenplay. Though a well regarded coming of age and sports film that features early roles for Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern and Jackie Earle Haley, it feels like it’s not at the front of conversations enough.
Carl mentions that he and I have had numerous conversations that should have been podcasts episodes, we just never recorded them. Well, here’s one and I feel one of our best. He brings a very personal touch to this film, having lived in the Bloomington, Indiana culture and having been a part of the Little 500 race himself.
I’m thrilled to have finally done an episode of a podcast with Carl, and perhaps the KRULL episodes we tease will come to fruition in the near future!
