The Brandon Peters Show: Shanghai Knights

Welcome to the premiere of The Brandon Peters Show!

When it came to selecting the first guest for The Brandon Peters Show, there was only one person I had in mind. Scott Mendelson and I met the first week after I moved to Los Angeles in late June of 2005. In addition to growing up in neighboring Midwestern states, we shared a similar passion for film and television. Scott opened my eyes to a whole new lens to appreciate and understand film by.

Since joining Forbes in 2013, Scott has grown to become one of the top film writers on the entire globe. His box office knowledge and sensibility is second to none and has reached the masses of the film pop culture lexicon. One look at any box office report he’s done will quickly showcase the intricate details and statistics he can provide that no other pundit could. Whether his articles upset Zack Snyder, find support from Jennifer Lawrence or make Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s day, he’s always proven fair, unbiased and consistent through his written words and analysis.

The genesis of my journey leading up to this podcast begins with Scott. In my passion for film and television, I had always wanted to be a director, a writer, an actor, but it was Scott who saw my strengths where I had been reluctant to acknowledge over the years. In 2012, he extended the opportunity (and built in audience) to become a recurring writer for his blog Mendelson’s Memos. I began with a full on, film by film, analysis of the James Bond series. From that little spark came Naptown Nerd, Why So Blu, Out Now With Aaron & Abe, Cult Cinema Cavalcade and now…The Brandon Peters Show.

As it was before as it is now, it starts with Scott. I hope you enjoy a few of our stories as well as the background on Scott’s path as a critic. Shanghai Knights is an “odd favorite” of Scott’s that he’s selected to be our film discussion for the episode. When it comes to subjects for discussion I’m hoping we can find things that aren’t as commonplace in the blogging/podcasting/YouTubing realm and Shanghai Knights certainly fits that bill. Please leave a comment, Tweet me your thoughts, e-mail them or post them on Facebook.

A Note On The Vocals
Due to the limitations of Skype, Brandon’s vocals from the Skype recording will be used in close cut portions of the conversation, showcasing a noticeable dip in quality. Further episodes of the show will be utilizing Zoom, eliminating this discrepancy.
