Molly Henery is a writer whose work and film mentality I’ve admired for a long while now. It was only fitting the show’s first guest I’ve not collaborated with before and first foray into horror be her. She’s a hustler when it comes to writing and covering horror films for film festivals as well as regular reviews.
She and I went through a list of films to possibly cover, and when she was open to doing Italian and Argento, I was elated. Not only would my first horror episode be an Italian film, it’d be Argento’s first film, The Bird With The Crystal Plumage as well. Like the Coen Bros in the following decade, Argento lifted off with one of the best directorial debuts of all time, labeling him “the Italian Hitchcock” upon release.
Perhaps you’re not a Giallo person, or even a horror person. If you’re into mysteries, suspense…and of course Alfred Hitchcock, you should give The Bird With The Crystal Plumage a try. Its a master craftsmanship display of camera work, mystery and suspense. Not too mention the rich gender thematics and more going on in the film
I hope you enjoy this wonderful episode. I had an absolute delight recording with Molly and I hope you enjoy her insight and perspective as much as I did. And here’s to more Argento and 70s/80s Italian cinema being a part of this new program.
